It’s not to loo late to get in front of your ideal audience this holiday season and beyond. Out-of-home (OOH) advertising allows you to reach people while they travel over the holiday season. Last holiday season, about 85 million people traveled between December 23 and January 3, most of them by car. In the middle of the pandemic, while lower than past years, that is still a whole bunch of people and it is expected to be many more this year. If you haven’t already, now is the time to make a plan to reach people on the go this holiday season.
Remind me… What is Out-of-home Advertising?
In case you need a refresher, because let’s be honest, you probably have the holidays and all the things you need to get done on your mind, we are here to help.
Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is advertising experienced outside of the home. This includes billboards, arena and stadium advertising, airports, and posters seen while “on the go;” it also includes place-based media seen in locations such as convenience stores, medical offices, hair salons, and other brick-and-mortar venues.
Digital out-of-home (DOOH) refers to dynamic media distributed across place-based networks in venues including, but not limited to: cafes, bars, restaurants, health clubs, colleges, arenas, gas stations, convenience stores, barber shops, airports and public spaces. DOOH allows you to be able to engage customers and audiences and extend the reach and effectiveness of your marketing efforts, plus, they can be changed and swapped out rather quickly.
How many Billboards are There in the United States?
If you are trying to reach people on the go this holiday season, you likely want to know when, where, and how you can do so. OOH is a great way to make your brand known, but like all advertising, you need to ensure you are in the right place at the right time to attract your ideal customers. Lucky for you, there are over 340 thousand billboard displays in the U.S. and in 2020, 9.6 thousand of those were digital billboards.
How Effective is Out-of-home Advertising for People on the Road?
OOH is not just impactful over the holidays, it is a great way to reach new and current customers throughout the year. Americans spend a massive 84 billion hours driving each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, adding around 2.62 trillion miles to the odometer. American drivers make an average of 2.24 trips per day, according to AAA, and adults between the ages of 25 and 49 tend to drive even more than that.
Now that you know that people are always on the go, you likely would like to understand if OOH and DOOH actually make an impact and catch their attention. Research has found that 71% of Americans consciously look at billboard messages while driving. 58% of people say that they learned about an event or restaurant that they later attended, and over 25% remembered the phone number and website address provided on the billboard.
Nielsen and the OAAA found that nearly 50% of surveyed adults had conducted an online search after first seeing the object of their search in an OOH ad. They also found that more than 40% of people searched for a brand online after seeing an OOH ad and 74% who visited a business after seeing an OOH ad made a purchase (OAAA).
How many People Travel Over the Holidays?
2020 was a strange year for many reasons; however, traveling for the holidays did not just stop because of the pandemic. According to AAA, while lower than previous years, over 81 million people traveled by car over the holiday season.
When it comes to flying over the holidays, in 2020, TSA screened almost 18 million people over the holiday travel period. The last day of the travel period, January 3, marked the highest checkpoint volume, with TSA screening 1,327,289 people.
That’s a whole lot of people and it should only be more this year!
